Bhutan is rightly revered worldwide as the Last Shangri-La. Nestled amidst the formidable Himalayan mountains, this untouched Himalayan gem is shielded from the hustle of modernity. The Drukpa Kagyupa sect of Mahayana Buddhism has deeply enriched its culture and storied history. For centuries, the Bhutanese people have fervently safeguarded their sacred heritage and unique identity through deliberate isolation.

The landscape of Bhutan is a testament to its charm: undulating hills, towering cliffs, and majestic mountains. Its forests are dense and alive, its people exude warmth, and its air remains pure. The architecture, with its awe-inspiring dzongs strategically perched, evokes a sense of wonder. Bhutan’s deeply rooted religion sparks fascination, and its artistic expressions are sublime.

Travellers to Bhutan are transported through time, encountering ancient fortresses like dzongs, centuries-old temples, monasteries, and stupas that dot the landscape. Prayer flags flutter along high ridges, wildlife thrives in dense forests, cascading waterfalls cascade like ethereal showers, and the genuine smiles of its friendly inhabitants’ welcome visitors. Bhutan’s pristine Himalayan backdrop, rich biodiversity, and vibrant Buddhist culture make it an increasingly sought-after destination for international tourists

Tour Plan

The flight to Paro offers one of the most breathtaking experiences in the entire Himalayan region. On this flight, you'll be treated to captivating vistas, culminating in an exhilarating descent into the Kingdom of Bhutan. Your initial welcome to Bhutan, as you step off the aircraft, will be the refreshing embrace of cool, pure mountain air.

Once you've completed immigration procedures and collected your luggage, our representative will extend a warm welcome, presenting you with a traditional 'tashi khaddar' – a white scarf symbolizing an auspicious reception for guests.

Following this heartfelt greeting, you embark on a picturesque road journey to Thimphu, Bhutan's capital town. The road winds through the scenic Paro valley, eventually reaching the confluence of the Paro and Thimphu rivers at Chuzom.

Upon arrival in Thimphu, check-in at your hotel. Thimphu, Bhutan's capital city, serves as the nexus of government, religion, and commerce. It uniquely blends modern development with ancient traditions, distinguishing it as perhaps the world's only capital without traffic lights.

Later in the day explore the National Memorial Chorten. This striking white structure, topped with a golden spire, is located near the heart of Thimphu and stands as one of the city's most iconic landmarks. Here, you can engage with locals who gather to circumambulate the chorten, spin the large red prayer wheels, and offer prayers at a small shrine within its gates. The paintings and statues inside the monument offer profound insights into Buddhist philosophy.

Enjoy authentic Bhutanese dinner at Heritage Home, Babesa. This restaurant is in a 600-year-old heritage home, serving authentic Bhutanese cuisine in a traditional style using wooden plates and mugs. Apart from a sumptuous meal served at the restaurant in a homely atmosphere, it is an overwhelming experience to see how well an ancient heritage has been preserved, maintained and bestowed for the benefit of future generations.

Overnight at the hotel in Thimphu. (Altitude 2,320m)

In the morning, embark on a brief drive north of the town to reach Buddha Dordenma, situated atop a hill within the serene Kuenselphodrang Nature Park. This remarkable statue brings to life an ancient prophecy originating from the 8th century A.D., which was unearthed by Terton Pema Lingpa, a discoverer of religious treasures. It is believed that this statue emits an aura of tranquillity and joy, extending its influence on the entire world. Crafted from bronze and adorned with a layer of golden gilding, this colossal Shakyamuni statue stands at a towering height of 51.5 meters, solidifying its position as one of Bhutan's largest statues. Within the Buddha Dordenma statue itself, an astonishing 125,000 smaller Buddha statues, also cast in bronze and gilded, have been meticulously arranged.

Then embark on a hike from Buddha Dordenma to Changangkha Lhakhang, a delightful journey lasting approximately 1.5 hours and offering easy terrain. As you follow the trail, you'll be greeted by a magnificent sight of thousands of prayer flags fluttering in the breeze, creating a colourful and spiritual atmosphere. These flags, adorned with prayers, are an integral part of Bhutanese culture and belief, believed to carry blessings to the heavens with each flutter. The trail winds through a pristine forest adorned with tall pines, graceful birch trees, and vibrant rhododendrons. Well-maintained throughout, the path features charming gazebos that offer perfect vantage points to admire the surrounding scenery.

Prayer Flag Hoisting en route:

Prayer flags are an integral part of Bhutanese landscape and also the cultural and religious heritage of the country especially the textile and weaving craft. They are ubiquitous in Bhutan; in and around monasteries, chortens or stupas, dzongs, lhakhangs, homes, on the railing of bridges and mountain roads, and invariably on or near the summit of the mighty peaks that preside over the country. Red, blue, green, yellow and white, they add a splash of rainbow colours to the rugged landscape. Deeply religious, the people of Bhutan believe that with each flutter, a flag releases the prayer printed on it into the air which in turn carries it to the heavens.

Arriving at Changangkha Lhakhang, you encounter an ancient temple steeped in history, dating back to its founding by Lama Phajo Drugom Shigpo in the 12th century, further extended by his son in the 13th century. This temple holds profound significance as the birthplace of the Drukpa lineage in Bhutan, founded by Lama Phajo from Tibet. Central to Changangkha Lhakhang is a revered statue of Chenrezig, embodying compassion and enlightenment with eleven heads. Here, for generations, parents have journeyed to seek blessings for their newborns from the protective deity Tamdrin.

Post lunch, drive to Choki Traditional Art School:

Founded in 1999 by the late Dasho Choki Dorji, Choki Traditional Art School is located in the serene village of Kabesa, just 10km north of Thimphu. A beacon of hope for children from disadvantaged backgrounds, the school offers free art education, food, and lodging. For over two decades, it has empowered students to embrace Bhutan's rich artistic heritage, with its alumni playing key roles in preserving and promoting the nation’s cultural identity. Here, art, tradition, and spirituality come to life. The experience at Choki Traditional Art School includes:

Begin with Spiritual Connection: Your journey starts with a sacred butter lamp lighting ceremony in front of the majestic Guru Rinpoche statue, a symbol of enlightenment and peace, setting the tone for a day of discovery.

Introduction to Choki Traditional Art School: Immerse yourself in Bhutanese artistry through a short documentary about the school’s mission to preserve traditional crafts. Sip signature mint tea while learning about its dedication to empowering young artisans.

Hands-On Experience: Unleash your inner artist in a traditional painting workshop guided by senior students, creating a masterpiece to take home as a memento of your journey.

Explore a 17th-Century Treasure: Step into a 340-year-old building consecrated by Druk Desi Tenzin Rabgye and blessed by The Divine Madman, offering a unique glimpse into Bhutan’s cultural history.

Live Art Demonstrations: Witness traditional arts firsthand with live demonstrations of Lhadi Painting, Sculpting, Wood Turning, Bamboo Crafts, Textile Weaving, Tailoring, and Embroidery, fostering a deeper appreciation for Bhutan’s artistic legacy.

Authentic Bhutanese Craft Shopping: Visit the art gallery showcasing exquisite handmade works by students and master artisans.

Wrap up your day of sightseeing with a visit to Trashichhoedzong, often referred to as the 'fortress of the glorious religion.' This remarkable edifice serves as the heart of both government and religion in Bhutan, housing the monarch's throne room and serving as the seat of the Je Khenpo, or Chief Abbot. Originally constructed in 1641 by Bhutan's political and religious unifier, Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, it underwent a meticulous reconstruction in the 1960s, employing traditional Bhutanese construction methods that eschewed the use of nails or architectural plans.

Before returning to hotel explore Ka Ja Throm. Previously known as the Centenary Farmers Market (CFM), Kaja Throm marks a significant transformation in Thimphu’s urban landscape and designated as the Market Quarter where leisure, culture, knowledge, employment, and tourism economies converge. The upgraded Kaja Throm is a vibrant and bustling market centre where the modern and traditional elements of Bhutanese life converge.

Enjoy your overnight stay at the hotel in Thimphu, situated at an altitude of 2,320 meters, amidst the serene beauty of Bhutan's capital.

Following breakfast, commence your journey to Punakha across Dochu-la pass, situated at an elevation of 3,088 meters (approximately 10,130 feet). Pause briefly at this point to soak in the magnificent scenery and appreciate the chorten, mani wall, and prayer flags that adorn this high-altitude location. If the skies are clear, you'll have the opportunity to behold a panoramic view of the following peaks from left to right: Masagang (7,158m), Tsendagang (6,960m), Terigang (7,060m), Jejegangphugang (7,158m), Kangphugang (7,170m), Zongphugang (7,060m), which resembles a table mountain and presides over the remote region of Lunana, and finally, Gangkar Puensum, the loftiest peak in Bhutan, soaring to an impressive 7,570 meters.

At Dochula Pass, a collection of 108 chortens or stupas, known as Druk Wangyal Chortens, was commissioned by Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuk, the eldest Queen Mother. These chortens are

structured in three tiers: the first and lowest level contains forty-five chortens, the second tier has thirty-six, and the top tier includes twenty-seven, encircling the central main chorten.

From Dochula pass, embark on a 45-minute Royal Botanical Hike. The trail takes you along the important religious route the clergy used since the 17the century as they shifted their headquarters between winter residence in Thimphu and summer residence in Punakha each year. The trail begins at the spectacular 108 Stupas at Dochula pass and takes about 45 minutes of easy downhill hike along the pristine and least explored nature featuring a wide variety of rhododendron, magnolia, oak and birch trees. The meandering brook gushes by while the birds above sing melodious tunes along as you walk. A highlight of the Royal Botanical Trail is that you will find over 28 out of 46 different species of Rhododendron blanketing the trail.

After enjoying nature’s splendour at Dochula pass, continue your journey onward to Punakha. Once the capital of Bhutan and the seat of government until 1955, Punakha still serves as the winter residence of the Je Khenpo, the chief abbot. Nestled in a temperate climate and blessed with natural drainage from the Pho Chhu (male) and Mo Chhu (female) rivers, the fertile Punakha valley yields abundant crops and fruits.

Picnic lunch by riverside, enjoying magnificent views all around.

After lunch, explore the Punakha Dzong, also known as the Palace of Great Happiness, constructed at the confluence of the Phochu and Mochu rivers in 1637 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. This grand dzong served as both a religious and administrative centre in Bhutan's history. It spans approximately 600 by 240 feet and features a six-story gold-domed tower. Within its walls, you'll encounter courtyards and religious sculptures that offer glimpses into the depth of history and spiritual traditions embedded here. Your knowledgeable guide will provide insights into this intricate culture, which may be exotic to outsiders but has thrived here for generations.

Later in the day, enjoy a brief excursion to Chimi Lhakhang, also known as the temple of fertility. Perched on a hillock in the heart of the valley, this temple is renowned for the belief that couples struggling with infertility are blessed with children shortly after visiting and offering prayers here. The trail leads through rice fields to the quaint settlement of Pana, which means 'field.' Strolling through the village near the temple provides you with rare insights into the daily lives and lifestyles of the villagers.

Conclude your day with an overnight stay at the hotel in Punakha, situated at an altitude of 1,300 meters.

Morning after breakfast, a beautiful hike takes you to the regal Khamsum Yuelley Namgel Chorten (approx. 2-hour round trip walk), which was built to remove negative forces and promote peace, stability and harmony in the changing world. The Chorten dominates the upper Punakha Valley with commanding views across the Mo Chhu and up towards the mountainous peaks of Gasa and beyond.

Post lunch, visit Wangduephodrang Dzong. Founded by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in 1638, on the top of high ridge between Punak Tsang Chhu and Dang Chhu rivers, offering fantastic of the valley below, Wangdue Dzong holds special place in Bhutan’s history. The strategic location of the dzong, provided Penlop (Governor) of Wangduephodrang, chance to protect the routes to Trongsa, Punakha, Dagana and Thimphu making him the third most powerful ruler after Governors of Paro and Trongsa. The Dzong had been damaged by fire in 2012 and restored to its original grandeur and splendour recently (in 2022).

Following your dzong visit, explore the captivating Rinchengang village, which sits atop a hill opposite the Wangduephodrang Dzong, just above the West-East national highway. The village's unique charm lies in its traditional mud houses, clustered together with an ancient allure that distinguishes it from other Bhutanese villages. Rinchengang boasts a close-knit community, and according to local legends, its early settlers were recruited by the revered saint Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in the early 17th century from Cooch Bihar in India, initially as skilled construction laborers for the Wangdue Dzong's construction. Their exceptional craftsmanship in stone masonry contributed significantly to the dzong's completion, earning them a permanent settlement in this village. Rinchengang is considered one of Bhutan's oldest villages, and it still preserves its time-honoured customs and traditions. Surrounded by terraced rice fields, the village is a delightful 15-minute walk from the highway, offering a splendid view of Wangduephodang Dzong and the meandering Punatsang Chhu river.

Overnight at the hotel in Punakha (Altitude 1,300m).

After enjoying breakfast, embark on a scenic drive along the picturesque highway to Paro.

Upon arrival, settle into your hotel accommodation.

Paro is a stunning valley steeped in rich culture and surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty. It hosts some of Bhutan's oldest temples, monasteries, the National Museum, and the country's sole international airport. To the north, Mount Chomolhari (7,314 meters) stands majestically in pristine white, while its glacial waters cascade through deep gorges to form the Paro River, known locally for its fertile terraced fields that yield the famous red rice.

Following a delightful lunch, visit Ta Dzong, originally a Watchtower and now home to the National Museum. The museum's extensive collection includes antique thangkha paintings, textiles, weaponry, household artifacts, and a diverse array of natural and historical treasures.

A short 10-minute walk brings you to Rinpung Dzong, also known as Paro Dzong, meaning ‘fortress of the heap of jewels’. This dzong boasts a captivating history and features exquisite wall paintings depicting Buddhist tales such as the four friends, the old man of long life, the wheel of life, episodes from the life of Milarepa, Mount Sumeru, and cosmic Mandala.

Evening take a stroll around Paro city centre, visiting local shops and enjoying coffee at a local café.

Attend today’s dinner in Bhutanese national dress. Bhutanese national dress, known as ‘Gho’ for men and ‘Kira’ for women, is an iconic symbol of the nation's rich cultural identity and traditional values. The Gho is a knee-length robe secured at the waist with a belt, complemented by knee-high socks and leather shoes. It is often accompanied by a colorful, handwoven scarf called ‘Kabney’ or ‘Rachu’ draped over the left shoulder, signifying the wearer's social or professional status. On the other hand, the Kira is an elegant ankle-length dress held together with a brooch, and it is paired with a silk blouse called ‘Wonju’. The traditional dress reflects Bhutan's commitment to preserving its unique heritage. Embracing the Bhutanese national dress fosters a strong sense of unity, pride, and reverence for traditions, while also showcasing the country's timeless beauty and grace.

Conclude your day with a comfortable overnight stay at the hotel in Paro, situated at an altitude of 2,280 meters.

Following early breakfast, embark on a captivating journey to Taktshang Monastery, also known as Tiger's Nest, which involves approximately a 5-hour round-trip hike. This monastery holds a position of utmost prominence among Bhutan's monastic institutions, clinging to the side of a cliff at an elevation of 900 meters above the Paro valley floor. Legend has it that Guru Rinpoche arrived at this sacred site on the back of a tigress and engaged in meditation, hence earning it the name 'Tiger's Nest.' Recognized as one of the most sanctified places in Bhutan, it was visited by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in 1646 and is now a pilgrimage site frequented by all Bhutanese at least once in their lifetime.

Later during the day, experience traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath, a cherished cultural practice that combines relaxation with therapeutic benefits. This ancient healing ritual involves heating river stones until they become red-hot and then immersing them in a wooden tub filled with water and medicinal herbs. The stones release minerals and essential oils into the water, creating a soothing and aromatic infusion. As one eases into the steaming bath, the warmth penetrates the body, relieving muscle tension, improving blood circulation, and promoting overall well-being. The practice is believed to cleanse the body of impurities and has been passed down through generations as a remedy for various ailments.

Overnight at the hotel in Paro (Altitude 2,280m)

Morning after breakfast, excursion to Chelela pass. Located at an elevation of 3,988 meters, Chelela is considered to be one of the highest motorable passes in Bhutan. It is also marked by hundreds of prayer flags fluttering in the wind.

From Chelela, embark on a fascinating excursion to Kila Gompa, a nunnery perched on a steep cliff face at 3500m. This staggering site manages to house 7 small temples and about 70 nuns. From Chelela pass, the Gompa is about an hour walk amidst magnificent, wooded area.

Later in the afternoon walk in to visit a traditional farmhouse. These charming structures, often adorned with intricate woodwork and painted in vibrant colors, are a testament to Bhutan's architectural heritage. Visitors have the opportunity to experience the warmth of Bhutanese hospitality, savor authentic local snacks, wear traditional dress, witness traditional farming practices, and immerse themselves in the tranquil ambiance of the countryside. It's a unique and enriching way to connect with the traditions and way of life that have endured for generations in this picturesque region of Bhutan. Also visit the 7th century Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the 108 temples built in the Himalayas by Tibetan King, Songtsen Gampo. The building of this temple marks the introduction of Buddhism in Bhutan.
